Now live in Indiana and I truly miss Oz donuts...I even told my boyfriend about them today (thus the internet search this afternoon). I wonder if there is anyway they could ship a few of their coconut crunch donuts to Indianapolis. :-) GREAT stuff...and yes, they offer to make you something if they are out...great customer service.

Alright Zan and Eric, you clearly have no context of how a classic, Mom & Pop if you will, donut shop works. Zan, they didn't have much of a selection because you probably didn't get out of bed until after the donut rush was over. That's the fun of visiting a place like John's. It's the whole experience. You drag yourself out of bed for the tasty reward of an incredible donut enjoyed in a fun, quaint atmosphere, with a genuine, not fake or obnoxious, counter guy that has worked there for ages. So what if he's grumpy from time to time, he's HUMAN. He's community and real, not commercialized and fake. So what if he doesn't care to put on a fake happy face for some lazy bums who stroll in well past prime donut hours. And Eric, do you really think every shop wants to "make it big?" I mean seriously, it's a family business. That's the beauty of small diners. They're hidden, hole-in-the-wall, grungy places that serve AMAZING food and unique experiences. John doesn't give a care in the world that he's not as big as Krispy Krap. He's doing his thing. Enriching people's taste buds and giving them a reason to take pride in their home town.

I found it hard to believe that the DD in St Jo closed. It was always busy. I assume the building was sold out from under them, as is happening so frequently these days. I hope they reopen somewhere else in town.

went to this donut shop, Jacks Donuts in Indep., Mo. on Lee's SUmmit Rd. Bought half a dozen donuts ( cinnamon rolls, choc. long johns and blue berry), paid $8.97 for them. Got home, they were HORRIBLE! SOAKED in grease, you could like feel the fat u were eating. NO FLAVOR at all. The Blueberry ones didnt even remotely take of blueberry, just soaked of oil. Same with cinnamon rolls and long johns. Hugely disappointed. Called up there and said something. Told me to come up for refund. I did and he asked where donuts were, made me drive all way back home to get them and bring them back. I did, he( the owner) looked at them, asked where rest were. I said " Are u serious? How do you think we realized the oil soaked of the donuts? He said he saw the oil soak in the donuts but since didnt have them all he wouldnt refund me." I walked out..........told the customer coming in NOT to get his donuts. And I drove off. WASTED $8.97 and WILL NEVER RETURN THERE AGAIN. And now am spreading my experience with this place. I could have gone across the road to quik trip and bought better donuts.

I agree. The donuts are not the same. The biggest difference is they use to ice them as you came in. They were still warm having not been out of the oil for more than 10 minutes or so. Now they are all made ahead early in the morning and aren't any where near as good. Why don't these places get it...The best donut places are the ones that serve them FRESH!!

Hey Anonymous. You sound an awful lot like that woman from the cupcake shop on the Plaza, you know the one, where the store manager goes around leaving nasty comments on yelp and blogs to try and take down your competition. You should make a better product and find more productive ways to spend your free time so you don't have to run down the competition so as to try to make your corporate product look better.

Le Petite Rouge donuts are simply, some of the best in town. I doubt you've even tried one.

@thejuliebook--The pieces of equipment I would find to be most crucial for enjoyment of this book would be a deep fryer, a thermometer, a donut/biscuit cutter and a rolling pin. The book includes a great list of suggested equipment and that which is unnecessary (like a donut pan). Maybe take a peek at your local bookstore and see what strikes you. What a great sister you are!

@Miss Kate--haven't worked my way through the book yet, but I would love to attempt de-gluten'ing all of the recipes. There is much to love about this book. Speaking of much to love, really enjoyed your recent post. I get giddy when my canning jars "ping!" I could become almost as obsessed with canning as with donuts!
